The foldable smartphone segment has seen two major contenders debut in quick succession — the Vivo X Fold 5 and Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7. Here's a comprehensive analysis of their specifications, design elements, camera performance, battery life, and pricing strategy.
Vivo’s latest foldable runs on the Snapdragon 8 Gen 3 chipset. Meanwhile, Samsung’s Z Fold 7 is powered by the newer Snapdragon 8 Elite SoC, designed with a 3nm architecture, delivering a performance edge in benchmark scores and efficiency.
Samsung Z Fold 7 features a slimmer build, measuring 8.9 mm when closed and 4.2 mm unfolded, and weighs 215 grams. Vivo’s counterpart is marginally thicker at 9.2 mm (folded) and 4.3 mm (open), with a weight of 217 grams.
Both phones sport nearly the same display sizes. Vivo equips the device with a 6.53-inch external and 8.03-inch internal AMOLED panel. Samsung matches that with a 6.5-inch cover display and 8-inch main screen. The Z Fold 7 integrates an upgraded Armor Flex Hinge, designed for reduced crease visibility and improved endurance.
The Vivo X Fold 5 includes second-gen Armor Glass on its cover screen. Samsung opts for Gorilla Glass Ceramic 2. Vivo claims triple protection ratings — IPX8, IPX9, and IP5X — while the Z Fold 7 carries an IP48 rating, balancing water and dust resistance.
Vivo collaborates with Zeiss for its camera system, offering a trio of 50MP sensors for primary, telephoto, and ultrawide shots, and a 20MP front-facing sensor. Samsung’s Z Fold 7 includes a 200MP main sensor, 12MP ultrawide, 10MP telephoto, and a 10MP front camera with a 100° field of view.
In terms of battery size, Vivo leads with a 6,000mAh unit. Samsung’s foldable carries a smaller 4,400mAh cell. Vivo’s advantage may appeal to heavy users prioritizing extended usage between charges.
The X Fold 5 comes in a single configuration — 16GB RAM and 512GB storage. Samsung Z Fold 7 is available in three variants: 12GB + 256GB, 12GB + 512GB, and 16GB + 1TB.
Vivo integrates custom AI tools such as Magic Move, Erase, and Image Expander. Samsung's Galaxy AI ecosystem provides tools like Photo Assist, Generative Edit, and productivity-focused features such as Drawing and Writing Assist.
Vivo prices its foldable at Rs 1,49,999. Samsung’s Z Fold 7 starts at Rs 1,74,999. The price gap reflects hardware upgrades, expanded software ecosystem, and enhanced display technology in the Samsung model.
Buyers must assess priorities — Samsung delivers superior processing power, camera resolution, and design refinement. Vivo, on the other hand, offers a larger battery and slightly more aggressive pricing.
